Abbeywood Cat Hospital is a doctor-owned practice and a proud member of the Independent Veterinary Practice Association (IVPA), highlighting its commitment to independent, quality veterinary care. Both Dr. Ubatuba and Dr. Johnston are members of the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (formerly the American Association of Feline Practitioners), and are committed to staying up-to-date on new and evolving treatments through on-going feline specific continuing education. We are dedicated to providing care that focuses on the uniqueness of cats and understands the nuances of their care.
Meet the Team
MARY UBATUBA, DVM
Dr. Ubatuba is a lifelong resident of the western Chicago suburbs who grew up in a family of cat lovers!
She attended veterinary school at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, accompanied by her cats Celeste and Mona. After graduation in 2005, she moved to Bryan-College Station, Texas for a year-long rotating small animal internship at Texas A&M University. She then returned to the Chicagoland area and worked as a small animal veterinarian in the southwest suburbs for 13 years before becoming the owner of Abbeywood Cat Hospital.
She is married to her high school sweetheart, and their busy household includes 4 cats and 2 young children.
Dr. Ubatuba has always regarded herself primarily as a feline focused doctor, earning the Feline Friendly certification for her previous practice. She has maintained her membership with the American Association of Feline Practitioners since graduation from veterinary school, and has always loved learning about feline focused medicine. With a particular love of keeping our older pets healthy and dental surgery, she is thrilled to provide compassionate care to the patients at Abbeywood Cat Hospital.
Tyler Johnston, DVM
Born and raised in rural Indiana, Dr. Johnston grew up surrounded by barn cats, which helped spark his lifelong love for feline medicine. He attended Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and moved to the Chicago suburbs after graduating in 2015. In 2024, he joined the Abbeywood Cat Hospital team, bringing with him a strong passion for geriatric medicine and client education, always striving to support both pets and their families with compassion and clarity.
Outside of work, Dr. Johnston enjoys spending time with his partner and their five cats, playing video games, exploring local restaurants, and relaxing with a good TV series.
Cathy F
Cathy joined the staff of Abbeywood Cat Hospital as a full time veterinary assistant in March of 2005. She now works only part time. Her duties include assisting our veterinarian during exams and medical procedures, greeting clients at the reception desk and making appointments.
She has four cats and one husband at home. Her children are now grown with their own children and she enjoys spending time with them. She also enjoys reading, cooking and just relaxing.
Carly S
Carly joined Abbeywood as a receptionist in 2020 after working various positions in the veterinary field over the past 10 years. Although her official title is now Office Manager, she helps out in any way she can. Her favorite things to do at Abbeywood are getting to know clients and patients, and keeping everything organized. When she’s not at work, you can find Carly at Target, or with her husband and three cats, Darla, Wendy, and Hank.
Char P
Char has been in the veterinary field for 35 years. She has always been a pet lover and really is happy to be part of the Abbeywood team. She spends her free time with family, friends, cat sitting and with her rescue dog Neary and, of course, napping.
Mikayla S
Mikayla joined Abbeywood as a CVT in 2023 and became AAFP Cat Friendly certified. A 2021 graduate of Joliet Junior College, she has always been surrounded by many pets her whole life. Cats have always been a part of her life and have wiggled into a special spot in her heart. Most of her spare time is spent at the barn or out finding new trails to go on walks. At home, Mikayla has four rats, Bonnie, Blair, Terra, and Star. Also at home are a cockatiel, and three cats, Cleo, Sassy, and Norman.
Natalie S
Natalie joined Abbeywood as a receptionist in 2024 after previously working as a veterinary assistant at a handful of other clinics. She has two cats of her own named Mimosa and Zeppelin who she raised since young kittens. She also has an aquarium that she enjoys taking care of. When she’s not working on school work, Natalie enjoys drawing and writing, hula hoop/flow dancing and spending time outdoors.
